Huge fund for agriculture to cope with climate change

09/04/2008 -- 6:03 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) is developing a 106.75 million USD (1.9 trillion VND) plan of action to counteract climate change, Deputy Minister Dao Xuan Hoc said.

“The programme will forecast the impacts from climate changes on farming, irrigation, aquaculture, forestry and rural development and serve as a foundation to make proper policies and solutions,” said the senior official.

He pointed out that 73 percent of the country’s population depend on agricultural production for their livelihood and that climate change would hardest hit these people, most of whom are already struggling.

Hoc said one of the most urgent tasks for Vietnam would be to recover, protect and develop mangrove forests to diminish the losses caused by sea level rise due to climate change.

According to experts, one of the reasons leading to climate change was uncontrolled deforestation. Over recent years, Vietnam has suffered severe natural disasters, including continuous flooding, drought and a prolonging cold spell in 2007.-Enditem
