Vietnam among top ten in sea bio-diversity

09/04/2008 -- 6:45 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - Biologists have found Vietnam to be a sanctuary of 11,000 marine floral and fauna varieties representative of 20 biological systems belonging to six spheres, making the country one of the top ten most diverse in biology.

The 1,200 sq. km of coral reefs from the north to the south of Vietnam is home to 300 species of stone corals and over 4,000 species of sea creatures, including some 400 species of fish.

With all this rich resource, Vietnam has emerged as one of the world’s 10 largest seafood exporters.

The country also boasts an estimated 126 superb ocean beaches, not counting hundreds of small-scaled beaches by lagoons, bays and virgin islands. There are 20 beaches classed as international standard, thus becoming attractive destinations for international tourists. The Nha Trang Bay was recognised as one of the 29 most beautiful bays in the world.

Along with Ha Long Bay recognised by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1994, all the four other heritage sites are along the coastline.

The Government is considering special conservation for 15 sea reserves.--Enditem
