Ministry warns of 18 food hygiene problems

09/04/2008 -- 6:45 PM

Hanoi (VNA)- Deputy Health Minister Cao Minh Quang has raised concerns over the absence of a professional inspection network as one of 18 food hygienic problems that ignite outbreaks of epidemics and food poisoning.

Addressing a national conference on food safety chaired by Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung in Hanoi on April 9, Quang also complained about poor budgets, unmanaged trading of foods and food-related services everywhere, rampant illegal importation of foods, resulting in the nationwide availability of fake foods and foods of poor quality, and the trading of foods without quarantine.

“The biggest problem is the lack of public awareness against threats caused by unsafe foods due to the traditional eating habits,” acknowledged the senior expert.

Permanent Deputy PM Hung called on responsible agencies to stay alert against food poisoning and focus on raising public awareness against the problem, thus encouraging people to change the eating habits towards safe foods for the sake of individuals and the community as a whole.--Enditem
