Ministry reports 854 severe acute diarrhea cases

09/04/2008 -- 6:56 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – A total of 854 people nationwide have now been infected with severe acute diarrhea, of whom 113 cases tested positive to V.cholera virus as of April 7.

The Ministry of Health reported on April 9 that the epidemic has so far hit 13 provinces and cities, with the latest affected areas being northern Ninh Binh and central Quang Binh provinces.

Hanoi remained the hardest struck by the disease, with 596 patients, including 44 positive V.cholera cases. It was followed by the central province of Thanh Hoa and northern port city of Haiphong which detected 68 and 62 patients, respectively.

The ministry warned that the epidemic has become more complicated and is likely to spread to the central and southern regions, fueled in particular by hot and wet weather.

In an effort to control the spread of the epidemic, the steering committee for severe acute diarrhea prevention urged relevant ministries, agencies and localities to increase public awareness campaigns about the disease and thoroughly treat discovered outbreaks and protect the surroundings.-Enditem
