Environment pact inked in Dak Nong province

Hanoi (VNA) – The Dak Nong province People’s Committee Chairman, Do The Nhu, and German Technical Cooperation’s (GTZ) Country Director, Dr Guenter Riethmacher, signed a project implementation agreement.

The project is entitled, Environmental Protection and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in Dak Nong province and is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The signing ceremony was held at the GTZ Office in Hanoi.

The overall aim of the project, which will commence in May 2008, is to improve the participation of the rural poor, specifically ethnic minority groups, in the economic development of Dak Nong province.

Participation will be improved both within and outside the project area through innovations and procedures. Proven concepts of community-based forest management will be integrated into provincial budgets. Proven agro-forestry models to improve highland agriculture will be used by poor and minority households.

The project supports the implementation of Vietnam ’s Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), as well as the National Environment and Protection Strategy. It will develop approaches and concepts that will be implemented at provincial and national levels, and in projects managed by other donors as well.

The first phase of the project is set to span three years. The German financial contribution for the first phase is two million enros (3.19 million USD).-Enditem
