Lack of awareness leads to more short-sightedness

22/04/2008 -- 10:54 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – A lack of awareness among parents on the risk of short-sightedness has led to more and more children suffering from poor vision.

The Head of Excimer Laser Department at the HCM City Eye Hospital , Tran Hai Yen, says many parents give little thought to short-sightedness.

About 50 percent of students across the nation suffer from poor eyesight, mainly short-sightedness. In some big city schools, the figure is up to 80 percent, says Tran The Hung, a doctor from Sai Gon-Hanoi Eye Hospital on Nguyen Du Street , Hanoi .

The highest risk group is 11 to 16 year olds, says Hung.
Many parents have no idea that if they let their babies watch TV for more than two hours a day, at a distance of less than 3 metres, their sight will dramatically deteriorate day by day, says Doctor Hung.

In addition, when children grow up, parents let them spend endless hours in front of a computer screen, doing homework, playing computer games, surfing the web or chatting to friends online.

Short-sightedness can develop due to straining the eyes with poor lighting or long sessions of viewing or reading, as well as poor nutrition, according to Nguyen Thi Minh, a doctor at the National Eye Hospital.-Enditem
