Vietnam focuses on drug detoxification

HCM City (VNA) – A high-level Vietnamese police administrator affirmed on April 22 the country has always placed importance on detoxifying and rehabilitating drug users.

The Deputy Director of the General Department of Police, M ajor-general Lam Minh Chien, made the statement during a three-day seminar where Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries and China shared experiences in drug rehabilitation.

The seminar was part of a plan of action between ASEAN, China and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to prevent and control dangerous drugs.

According to the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs’ Social Evil Prevention Department , Vietnam has urged social and private organisations to participate in detoxifying drug users and encouraged reformed drug users to join socio-economic development programs in their localities to reintegrate into the community.

By the end of 2007, Vietnam had managed 137,600 drug users, with more than 68 percent of them under 30 years old.

The country has 87 detoxification centres which have helped reform over 258,980 drug users from 2001 to 2007.-Enditem
