Transport of pigs to China cut off

23/04/2008 -- 11:26 AM

Hanoi (VNA) - Pigs heading from Vietnam to China would not be allowed to pass through provinces stricken by blue ear disease, Agriculture and Rural Development Deputy Minister Bui Ba Bong announced in an urgent message on April 22.

The danger of spreading Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) (known as blue ear disease) in the north was high because of pig transportation to the neighbouring country, he said.

Only quarantined live pigs from non-PRRS provinces could be exported.

PRRS has spread to northern Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces, both about 90km south of Hanoi , while pigs are still being killed in the already-stricken provinces in the centre and Central Highlands .

The disease has hit more than 7,100 pigs in 10 provinces since it returned to Vietnam in early March.-Enditem
