Gov't helps border residents get better conditions

24/04/2008 -- 11:28 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – The Prime Minister has given the green light to a plan to create stable settlements for people living in areas bordering Laos and northern midland localities from now to 2015.

The project, which requires a total investment of around 5.4 trillion VND, will be carried out at 81 communes in central Nghe An and Thanh Hoa provinces and northern mountainous Son La and Dien Bien provinces.

The project will expand farming land acreage and promote the forestry industry to help local people increase incomes.
In addition, the project also plans to build 20 border markets and open new border gates to facilitate trade activities. It will upgrade 442 km of inter-commune roads to make transportation in these areas easier.

In an effort to improve the communities and living conditions of local people, 1,675 km of new roads will be built and 380 irrigation works and water channels installed along with other primary works, including schools, health centres, cultural houses, TV stations, and water supply stations.

As many as 35,384 poor households in the border communes will benefit from the project.-Enditem
