Hanoi (VNA) – A basic training programme for stroke treatment was launched in Hanoi on April 23 for around 6,000 Vietnamese doctors working in the mental health, intensive care, heart, rehabilitation and gerontology departments of 150 municipal and provincial hospitals nationwide.
The 4.5 billion VND programme funded by Austria ’s Ebewe Pharma Company will run until the end of 2009.
Vietnam is the third nation, after China and South Africa , that has collaborated with the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) to organise a programme on training doctors in stroke treatment, said President of the WSO’s Training Committee Prof. Michael Brainin.
According to the WSO, stroke is the second killer in the world after coronary. Stroke is found most common among middle-aged and elderly people in the country but the disease is increasing affecting younger people aged between 40-45, said President of the Vietnam Mental Health Association Prof. Dr. Le Duc Hinh.
At present, Vietnam’s hospitals lack stroke treatment wards. The stroke treatment training programme hopes to reduce three percent of patients dying from stroke, allow five percent of stroke patients to recover to independent living and reduce two percent of stroke patients in need of hospital care, he added.-Enditem
