Fires in southern wetland park wiped out

26/04/2008 -- 8:23 PM

Dong Thap (VNA) - Fires in the Tram Chim National Park in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap were absolutely stamped out on April 25.

Reports released by the park managers show that the fires that broke out four days earlier spread over 332 ha of forests, including 165 ha of cajuputs.

The entire flock of cranes had to abandon their sanctuary in the reserve for other forests, while a large number of other wildlife species were burnt to death.

Local authorities mobilised more than 1,000 people, including policemen, soldiers, forest rangers and locals, to take part in the extinguishing work.

Investigation into the disaster is underway, while measures to overcome the aftermath were tabled.-Enditem
