Cuba raises pensions and social aid

28/04/2008 -- 7:57 PM

Havana (VNA) – As of May, pensions given to 2.16 million Cuban people will be raised to reach an annual budget of 837 million pesos, local media reported.

The Cuban government decided to increase by 20 percent retirement pensions to honour millions of men and women who dedicated most of their lives to creative work for almost five decades and are still defending socialism, Cuba’s Prensa Latina news agency cited a communique published by “Juventud Rebelde” daily in its edition headlines on April 27, as saying.

The communique says that the government cannot apply salary increases to all workers now, but advanced that next raises will be applied by sectors and priorities.

Those who receive increases in their salary will contribute 5 percent to social security as a way to raise the funds assigned to that conquest of the Revolution, the Cuban agency added. –Enditem
