Hanoi (VNA) – The H5 strain of the bird flu virus has been detected in dead and dying swans found recently near Lake Towada in Kosaka, Akita Prefecture, Japan’s Kyodo news reported.

Three dead swans and one dying swan were found on April 21 and the virus was detected in three of the four birds, the prefecture authorities said on April 28.

The authorities added that it has asked the National Institute of Animal Health, an independent administrative agency based in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture , to determine whether the virus belongs to the deadly H5N1 strain.

No chicken farms are located within a radius of 10 kilometres from where the swans were found but the prefecture authorities is alerting neighbouring farms to prevent wild birds from entering their poultry houses, Kyodo news said. –Enditem
