EVN sheds light on power shortage

29/04/2008 -- 11:54 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) on April 28 held a live online forum through which the general public expressed their opinions of the nation’s ongoing shortage of electricity.

During the two-and- a-half- hour question and answer session, EVN received more than 200 inquiries.

The questions targeted EVN’s 2008 projections for production and consumption, the cause of the shortage, policies for attracting investment in the nation’s energy sector, the proposed construction of a nuclear power plant, and effective optimisation of power use.

Some people were critical of EVN, and its lack of accountability for the insufficient power supply.

One said: “While EVN’s capital is large, the frequency of the power cuts keeps growing ... EVN should stop pointing the finger of blame at customers for not applying power saving measures.”

EVN’s deputy general director, Nguyen Manh Hung, explained that the corporation forecast electricity consumption for the current dry season to increase to 18 percent. The figure has so far climbed to 19 percent.
Moreover, in major industrial provinces and cities, consumption has soared to between 23 and 44 percent in the past three months, further exacerbating the situation.

Hung said a surge in consumption left EVN no choice but to persevere with the power cuts. EVN would always maintain its policy of prioritising the supply of electricity for not only production but everyday life, he pledged.

From over 200 posts, sixty were answered directly while the remainder will be published on the EVN website: tietkiemnangluong.vn .-Enditem
