29/04/2008 -- 5:08 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a loan of 105 million USD for the infrastructure development in China's northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

"We aim to strengthen cross-border trade, tourism development and economic growth to raise living standards while protecting the environment of the poorest, most remote parts of the country," Amy Leung, principal urban development specialist of ADB's East Asia Department said on ADB’s recent press release.

ADB’s funding will be pumped into a 190.9 million USD project to be carried out in three areas in Xinjiang including Alashankou, the Kanas scenic region and Yining City, ADB said on its website.

The project will focus on the construction of local roads, water supply systems, waste water treatment facilities and the development of ecological protection areas.

In addition, ADB will provide a 150,000 USD grant to support tourism development and educate ethnic communities in the Kanas scenic region on proper hygiene, the bank said.-Enditem
