Japan confirms H5N1 virus in dead swans

29/04/2008 -- 10:03 PM

Tokyo (VNA) - The Japanese National Institute of Animal Health on April 29 confirmed that the H5 strain of the bird flu virus detected in several dead and dying swans in northeastern Akita prefecture last week belongs to the highly virulent H5N1 strain.

The result forced the Akita authorities to conduct inspections in the two following days at 15 farms within a radius of 30km of the location of the site where the first case of virus was detected. Roughly 42,000 birds will be subject to the inspections, according to Kyodo News.

The local authorities also asked farmers to check their animals and birds for abnormal symptoms.

No widespread deaths of birds or animals have been reported in the region.-Enditem
