Japan, RoK agree trilateral nuke talks with US

01/05/2008 -- 8:30 PM

Tokyo (VNA) - Japan and the Republic of Korea’s representatives to the six-party talks on denuclearisation on the Korean peninsular agreed on May 1 to hold a trilateral dialogue among top negotiators from Japan, the RoK and the United States.

The talks are aimed at pressing the Democratic People’ Republic of Korea (DPRK) for a full account of its nuclear arms and development programmes.

At rounds of six-party nuke negotiations last year, the DPRK promised to disable its key nuclear facilities and declare all its nuclear programmes in exchange for energy assistance.

But the multilateral talks stalled after Pyongyang failed to give an acceptable account of its nuclear programmes by the end-of-2007 deadline set under a six-party deal involving the two Koreas, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.

Timetable for the next round has been not yet fixed.-Enditem
