Weightlifter likely to qualify for Olympics

Hanoi (VNA) – A Vietnamese female weightlifter will be participating at the Beijing Olympics due to the success of the women’s team at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Kanazawa , Japan , a source from Vietnam Weightlifting Federation (VWF) said recently.

It is expected that the VWF will send Nguyen Thi Thiet to compete in the women’s 63kg category.

At the Asian Weightlifting Championship, which closed on May 1, the Vietnamese women’s team finished second behind Indonesia .

The men’s and women’s team combined brought home two golds, six silvers and one bronze medal.

Four years ago, Thiet and team mate Nguyen Thi Bich Loan were the first Vietnamese weightlifter to compete in the Olympics.

Thiet was awarded a wild card place at the 2004 Athens Olympics after winning a bonze medal at the Asian Championships.

Vietnam are also hoping to send Hoang Anh Tuan to the Olympics. Tuan won two gold medals at the Asian Championship in Kanazawa in the in the men’s 56kg.

Tuan will have to wait until May 31 for the International Weightlifting Federation to announce the list of 170 male weightlifters to qualify for the Olympics in August.

More than 150 Olympic berths were awarded following the results of the World Championship in 2006 and 2007.

So far, 14 athletes from Vietnam have qualified for the Olympics in taekwondo, wushu, shooting and table tennis.

Vietnam ’s best performance to date at the Olympics was a silver medal won by women’s taekwondo artist Tran Hieu Ngan in Sydney in 2000.-Enditem
