05/05/2008 -- 4:08 PM

Tokyo (VNA) - The deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza has been found in a dead swan on the Notsuke Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido , the Japanese Environment Ministry reported on May 5.

Following the discovery of the virus, the Hokkaido prefectural authorities started on-site inspections of five chicken farms within a 30 kilometre radius of the site where the dead swan was found.

The swan was found on April 24, the Kyodo News said. It tested positive for avian influenza virus in a simple laboratory test and Hokkaido University conducted a probe to determine if the virus was highly pathogenic.

The deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza virus was detected in three out of four swans found dead or dying near Lake Towada in Akita Prefecture on April 21.- Enditem
