Philippines opens first regional biogas plant

Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippines has launched the first Southeast Asian biogas project at Quezon city’s controlled disposal facility in Barangay Payatas to provide alternative energy and reduce carbon emissions. The plant, which works by extracting, collecting and processing biogas produced from decomposing solid waste, is expected to annually provide 1 million kilowatts - equivalent to consumption of about 1, 000 residential local users, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported on May 5. However, the provision of electricity is dependent on finalising a power purchase agreement with Manila Electric Company (Meralco). “The pioneering project will reduce or eliminate fire and explosion hazards, thus making it a safer environment,” Payatas Operations Group Head Hadji Jameel Jaymalin was quoted as saying. This landmark project will generate employment opportunities for the local, he said. The biogas plant is a joint effort of Pangea Green Energy – an Italian-based company focused on clean energy and carbon emission reduction – and its local counterpart Pangea Green Energy Philippines, the PNA said.-Enditem
