Indonesia extradites four East Timor rebels to Dili

05/05/2008 -- 9:15 PM

Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia has extradited four East Timorese soldiers suspected of involvement in last February 11’s attempt on East Timorese President Ramos Horta’s life, an Indonesian senior police said.

The four men had fled to Indonesia but were captured by Indonesian police in East Nusatenggara and Jakarta recently at the East Timorese government’s request, Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported.

They were put on a plane bound for the East Timorese capital of Dili via Denpasar, Bali, National Police Chief, Gen. Sutanto, told reporters at the presidential office in Jakarta on May 5.

Sutanto said Indonesian police were leaving the job of investigating the four men’s role in the assassination attempt to the East Timorese authorities.

President Ramos Horta was shot twice in the back, and one of the bullets tore through his abdomen. After initial surgery in Dili he was flown to Darwin, Australia, for emergency treatment.

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao was also attacked elsewhere at the same time but he escaped unhurt.-Enditem
