Hanoi (VNA) – Do Huy Long of Hanoi clocked in at 59.14 seconds to take home a gold medal in the men’s 100m backstroke at the Malaysia Open Swimming Championship at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil on Sunday.
Long, 20, had already set a new record in the men’s 200m backstroke at the National Short Distance Swimming Championships in Hanoi in March. He finished this race ahead of Chung Lao Yeung from Hong Kong , who came in second at one minute and 0.5 seconds, and host Daiel Bego, who placed third.
Over the weekend, Long also bagged a gold in the 50m event.
Also on Sunday, the Hanoian swimmer walked away empty handed in the men’s final 200m backstroke.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Huu Viet from Hai Phong Port City, who won Vietnam’s first gold in swimming in the 100m breaststroke at the Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines in 2005, made a disappointing performance in the 200m breaststroke event as the favourite, finishing sixth with a time of 2:28.29.
The Hai Phong City-born swimmer had won the men’s 100m breaststroke gold at the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand last December with a time of 1:03.72, his second successive SEA Games title and Vietnam’s only gold in a swimming event this year. He choked in the 100m breaststroke last weekend, which would have spearheaded Vietnam team’s bid for an Olympic berth in Beijing .
As scheduled, Viet, who competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics, and Long will return to Vietnam to prepare for the Southeast Asian Games in Laos next year.-Enditem
