Five percent of population suffers from asthma

06/05/2008 -- 4:45 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Around 4 million Vietnamese people, or 5 percent of the population, are suffering from asthma, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

The ministry released the statistics at a meeting held in Hanoi on May 6 in response to 2008 Global Asthma Day.

The Ministry said it has been carrying out an asthma prevention project, aimed at increasing capacity in fighting the disease, providing asthma consultancy, training medical workers and raising public asthma prevention awareness.

According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 300 million people around world have asthma and the figure is expected to reach 400 by 2025.

The rate of mortality caused by bronchial asthma has increased swiftly over recent years. Deaths are just lower than that caused by cancers and higher than that caused by heart diseases.-Enditem
