China reports jump in hand-foot-mouth cases

06/05/2008 -- 5:00 PM

Beijing (VNA) - The number of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases reported in China has by May 5 risen to 11,900 with 26 fatalities, according to Xinhua news agency.

About 10,200 of those have occurred in the hardest-hit areas of Anhui, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and the capital Beijing. Smaller outbreaks have been reported in Hebei, Jiangsu, Hunan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Henan provinces and in the city of Chongqing.

Most of the deaths have been blamed on enterovirus 71, or EV-71, but it isn't known how many of the overall infections are definitely linked to the virus.

The epidemic was first reported on March 20 in Fuyang, where since that date 22 children have died, 4,496 children have suffered infection and 1,314 are still hospitalized, said the news agency.-Enditem
