Malaysia, Indonesia to cooperate in energy industry

06/05/2008 -- 5:03 PM

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to cooperate in promoting the jatropha industry under the domain of renewable energy, said sources of Malaysian government on May 6.

The cooperation will cover research and development activities concerning agronomic practices, breeding of quality seeds of the biodiesel plant and processing technologies, Malaysia’s Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry said.

The agreement was reached at the third joint committee on bilateral commodities cooperation that was held recently in Bali, Indonesia. The meeting brought together senior officials from Malaysian Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry and Indonesia’s Agriculture Ministry.

The jatropha industry is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years as oil from the jatropha curcas plant can be effectively used to produce biodiesel, according to Bernama news agency.

At the meeting, both countries also agreed to help each other produce up to standard quality cocoa beans and cocoa products.- Enditem
