Current events


· The third session of the 12 th National Assembly opened (All dailies, page 1).

· Striving to curb inflation, stabilise the macro economy and ensure social welfare and sustainable growth (Nhan dan, page 1). The Government report was presented by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at the third session of the 12th National Assembly.

· Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received a delegation of US entrepreneurs (Nhan dan, page 1).

· Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman: Vietnam believes that the Myanmar people will quickly overcome the aftermath of cyclone Nargis (Nhan dan, page 8).

Socio-economic Affairs

· Japan’s second largest human resource development group expanded its operation in Vietnam (Quan doi Nhan dan, page 8).

· Hanoi established the steering committee for terrorism prevention and combating (Ha Noi Moi, page 1).

· A 900 million USD fertiliser plant will be built in the southernmost province of Ca Mau (Saigon Giai phong, page 11).

· US Ambassador Michael W. Michalak: The flow of US investment will continue to pour into Vietnam at the end of this year (Lao dong, page 6).

· 3,335 billion VND for the restoration of the environment in Nhue and Day river basins (Lao dong, page 3).

· Blue ear epidemic in pigs is likely to spread in the north (Lao dong, page 1).

· Food security: land acreages for rice cultivation should be strictly protected (Lao dong, page 1).

· Planning of the capital: more space for development (Ha Noi Moi, page 1).

· Work started on a Chinese-funded building (Nhan dan, page 8). On May 6, the Ho Chi Minh Politics and Administration Institute broke the ground for a dormitory for students, which is estimated to cost 41 million Chinese yuan.

· Total retail turnover increased sharply due to price hikes (Thoi bao Tai chinh Viet Nam [Viet Nam Financial Times], No. 54, page 3). According to the General Statistics Office, the country’s total retail sales and service revenue exceeded 295 trillion VND in the first four months of the year, a monthly per capita amount of 858,000 VND or a year-on-year rise of 29.5 percent.

· Creating favourable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to buy houses (Thoi bao Tai chinh Viet Nam, No. 54, page 6).

· Banks raised the yearly interest rate for VND deposits to 12 percent: Will the move help them mobilise redundant capital? (Thoi bao Tai chinh Viet Nam, No. 54, page 9).

· Positive changes in official development assistance (ODA) attraction (Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam [Viet Nam Economic Times], No. 109, page 4). Vietnam’s ODA capital disbursement reached 1.8 billion USD in 2006, 2 billion USD in 2007 and is estimated to hit 2.2 billion USD this year. The 2008 target is within reach as ODA-funded projects are being carried out on schedule.

· Land for rice cultivation is “calling for help” (Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam, No. 109, page 5). In recent years, localities have raced to “roll out red carpet” for investors, resulting in the rapid loss of farmland to industrial and urban zones. Scientists warned of food insecurity if the country fails to reserve enough land for rice cultivation.

· Representatives from 23 US leading groups visited Vietnam to seek investment opportunities (Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam, No. 109, page 6).

· Ho Chi Minh City: apartment market saw strong fluctuations. Supply is higher than demand (Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam, No. 109, page 15).

· Are there any “giants” who sway the stock market? (Tien phong [Vanguard], No. 127, page 5). The stock market has witnessed sharp decreases since early 2008 despite a series of supportive solutions. However, experts said these solutions are provisional and the market is in need of stronger and long-term measures.

International Affairs

· Crude oil price increased to 120.54 USD per barrel (Nhan dan, page 8).

· Russia: a smooth transfer of power (Quan doi Nhan dan, page 8). Cannons will fire in Moscow today (May 7) to welcome the new owner of the Kremlin Palace, the third President of Russian Federation: D. Medvedev.

· Russia-US nuclear agreement signed (Saigon Giai phong, page 12).

· Iran postponed security negotiations on the Iraqi issue with the US (Saigon Giai phong, page 12).

· FED continued to support US banks (Ha Noi Moi, page 8).

· Efforts to cope with the food crisis (Nhan dan, page 8).-Enditem
