07/05/2008 -- 11:09 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – Vu Thi Thuong won a gold medal in the cross country event at the Mountain Bike Open tournament in Malaysia on the weekend.

Thuong pulled off a spectacular finish to leave her nearest rival trailing seven minutes behind.

Hanoi-based Thuong narrowly missed out on the double when she finished second in the U-21, 24km cross-country race following a controversial judging decision.

As Thuong was closing in on her rival form Indonesia , the judges called the last lap, void leaving the Vietnamese in second place.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese three-time Southeast Asian Games champion Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, who is struggling to find her from, failed to qualify for the final.

Le Kim Thoa, from Vinh Long province, won a bronze medal in the women’s team event after coming in third in the downhill race. Last week, Thoa finished fourth in the Asian Youth Cycling Championship’s individual time trial in Japan.-Enditem
