PM instructs to stop hand-foot-mouth disease

07/05/2008 -- 11:35 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has ordered the Health Ministry, relevant ministries and agencies to take urgent measures to prevent the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD).

The HFMD disease caused by the enterovirus 71 has spread throughout several provinces and cities in China , leaving thousands of people infected and over 20 children dead. The lethal intestinal virus is expected to spread towards the south.

In an effort to stop the disease entering Vietnam , the PM urged relevant ministries and central agencies to instruct local authorities and agencies to take preventive measures.

He also asked the localities to keep a close watch for and detect infected cases, particularly in children. Local forces should be organised to carry out preventive measures in order to minimise the disease’s infection, he said.

The PM also asked localities to send periodical reports of the prevention work to the Health Ministry and himself.

According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, the number of HFMD cases reported in China by May 5 has risen to 11,900 with 26 fatalities.-Enditem
