Danang to celebrate Buddha’s birthday outdoor

07/05/2008 -- 2:18 PM

Danang (VNA) – The Lord Buddha’s birthday will be celebrated in central Danang city with a series of outdoor festivities.

A Buddhist week, to also celebrate the United Nations Day of Vesak 2008 scheduled for mid-May in Vietnam, will begin on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month (May 12) with a ceremony of opening prayers at the Phap Lam pagoda.

The Danang Water Park will host a cultural-music programme from the 12th-15th days of the fourth lunar month (May 16-19), including a performance reflecting the Buddha’s life, music and poetic exchanges. An exhibition will showcase more than 200 statues of Buddha and Bodhisattvas, some of which are over 300 years old.

A large lantern, which is expected to be listed on Vietnam’s Guinness Book of Records, and an 8 metre diameter Dharma Chakra (Wheel of the Law), will also be displayed during the programme.

During the Vesak celebrations, a chain of 31 flower-decorated vehicles will process along the city’s main streets every night.

The festivities will also be used as impetus to accelerate charitable activities such as medical check-ups and construction of houses for poor people and those living in remote and isolated areas.

Local travel agencies are taking the opportunity to coordinate special tours of pagodas and landscapes. The Vitour company will organise tours that take visitors from the Danang to Hanoi and vice versa for the celebrations of Buddha’s birthday.-Enditem
