Laos receives 1 mln USD for Mekong management

07/05/2008 -- 5:16 PM

Vientiane (VNA) - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Australia have pledged 1 million USD grant to help Laos improve management of its vast water and environmental resources flowing from the Mekong River.

“The Mekong River's water resources contribute to the economy through irrigation for agriculture and will sustain growing hydropower revenues,” said senior water resources management specialist of ADB's Southeast Asia Department Ian W. Makin, in the May 5 press release.

The project will help develop skills and experience needed for the country to manage those resources and improve the unique environmental aspects that create tourism in the region, he added.

The Mekong River runs through six Southeast Asian countries, with Laos being the source of around 38 percent of the annual flow of the 11 th longest river in the world. It boasts more than 1,200 species of fish, which makes the river one of the world's most biodiverse.

Other countries that share the Mekong are Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Myanmar.- Enditem
