Bac Ninh marks Lord Buddha’s birthday

07/05/2008 -- 7:25 PM

Bac Ninh (VNA) – A ceremony was held in northern Bac Ninh province on May 7 to celebrate the Lord Buddha’s 2552nd birthday, attracting thousands of Buddhist dignitaries and followers in and outside the province.

Attended by representatives from the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and its chapters in Bac Ninh’s neighbouring provinces, the ceremony is part of celebrations for the United Nations Days of Vesak, to open in Hanoi on May 13.

During the event, dignitaries and followers paid a tribute to the city’s fallen soldiers cemetery, presented gifts to those who contributed to the revolution, attended cultural activities and prayed for peace.

The provincial Buddhist Sangha’s executive council also held a seminar about Buddhism and its organisation’s operations.

The UN Day of Vesak, to run until May 17, is the world’s most important Buddhist festival marking Buddha’s birthday and his enlightenment and entry into nirvana.-Enditem
