Japan, China to boost ties 'at new historic point'

Tokyo (VNA) - Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and Chinese President Hu Jintao on May 7 agreed to promote relations at ''a new historic starting point'', local media reported.

At a meeting during the Chinese president’s five-day visit to Japan, the leaders said the two countries were cooperative partners that will not be a threat to one another.

They also agreed to solve a thorny bilateral row through negotiation and called for new era of ties, agreeing to boost mutual trust and establish regular meetings between the two countries' leaders.

Following their meeting the two countries issued a series of documents including a joint statement calling for the promotion of mutual beneficial ties.

The statement said the two sides “will continually deepen mutual understanding, establish mutual trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly create a good future for the Asia Pacific and the world.”

The two countries also signed another joint statement on climate change, in which they agreed to cooperate on the establishment of a new international framework for dealing with the problem after the completion of effectiveness of Kyoto Protocol by 2012.

During his stay in Japan, Chinese president Hu Jintao had meeting with Japanese Emperor Akihito, politic party leaders and representatives of Japanese business circles.-Enditem
