US businesses reiterate interest in Vietnam

07/05/2008 -- 10:04 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Members of a US business mission to Vietnam reiterated at a press conference on May 7 after meetings with Vietnamese leaders that US investors are taking a long-term perspective in Vietnam.

The US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) President Matthew Daley says US companies are not looking to make a quick profit in Vietnam and then leave.

“They (US businesses) don’t come to Vietnam to realise an opportunity, make their profit in a few months and then leave,” Daley told reporters at the conference.

“Their horizon is a horizon that is not measured in weeks and months but years, decades and even generations.”

According to the USABC President, Vietnam is becoming a great destination for American businesses and US companies are optimistic about business prospects in Vietnam.

USABC’s US-Vietnam Business Committee Chairman Stuart Dean agreed with Daley and said US companies are also interested in building factories and infrastructure in Vietnam.

He said enterprises are seeking partners for production and exports in their global operations and to transfer advanced technologies in the fields of energy, aviation and information technology.

About half of the business delegation visiting Vietnam were already investing in Vietnam, Dean said.

According to the chairman, the Vietnam visit from May 5-7 by the largest-ever American companies mission illustrates US businesses’ interest in Vietnam.

During the visit, the US business delegation had separate meetings with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Permanent member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat Truong Tan Sang.-Enditem
