Beijing (VNA) – The recent outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) will not affect the Beijing Olympic Games to be held in China in August, Chinese health ministry spokesman Mao Qun'an said on May 7.

China has taken a series of measures to prevent a large-scale spread of the disease and can control it, spokesman Mao was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying at a press conference jointly held by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.

Health authorities have already closed two kindergartens in Beijing where there has been cases recently reported, said Mao.

He noted that China may see a higher incidence of hand-foot-mouth disease in the summer months of June and July.

The number of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases reported in China this year jumped to 19,962 as of May 7, resulting in 28 deaths, Xinhua news agency reported.-Enditem
