Hanoi (VNA) - A series of strong earthquakes, including one reaching 6.7 on the richter scale, hit Tokyo area on the morning of May 8, briefly cutting power to more than 4,000 homes and causing minor injuries.
Six people were injured in Tokyo, Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba prefectures, foreign media reported, adding the quake could also be strongly felt north of Tokyo in Tochigi Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the earthquake’s epicentre was in the Pacific ocean about 40km below sea level off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.
No tsunami warning was issued following the quake, which generated several minor aftershocks, the JMA said. Around 30 minutes after the 6.7-magnitude earthquake, another one reaching 5.3 on the richter scale hit the region, foreign media reported.
In July last year, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked central Japan, killing 11 people and shutting down the world's largest nuclear power plant. -Enditem
