Vietnam water resources fail classification

08/05/2008 -- 8:58 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - The chief advisor of Vietnam’s water resource assessment project, Des Cleary, has rated nine out of the country’s 12 criteria for water resource classification and management as ineligible.

Cleary revealed the assessment at a seminar held in Hanoi on May 8 as part of a one-year project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The advisor said the results were due to the country’s failure to appraise the true value of water. Vietnam is yet to consider water a valuable natural resource, he said.

The water project, to run until August 2008, aims to help the Vietnamese government evaluate water use and devise plans to better manage water resources.

A common framework for the water sector’s development for the next decade is expected to be planned once the project is completed.-Enditem
