Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has urged the country’s northern key economic region to continue exploiting its potentials and strengths for stronger and more active development. Chairing a meeting of the northern key economic region in Hanoi on May 8, Deputy PM Hai, who is also head of the steering committee for development of key economic regions, reported on the region’s achievements and shortcomings.
The Deputy PM said the region faced problems including overloaded infrastructure, an imbalance between industrial and agricultural development, an inadequate and unqualified workforce and a shortage of skilled workers.
He asked relevant ministries, agencies and localities to monitor plans and designs for inland waterways, ports, traffic systems, land use, infrastructure development, water supply and drainage, solid waste treatment and labour issues.
Reports delivered at the meeting show the northern key economic region posted growth of 13.2 percent last year and 12 percent in the first four months of 2008.
The region was successful in attracting investment, making up 26 percent of the country’s total number of projects, 27 percent of the registered capital and 24 percent of disbursed funds.
Economic restructuring has also shown positive signs, with the service sector accounting for 45.9 percent of the region’s gross domestic product, industry registering 43.7 percent and agriculture hitting 10.4 percent.-Enditem
