Cambodia, Thailand progress on border temple issue

08/05/2008 -- 10:17 PM

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to follow a recent World Heritage Committee decision for Cambodia to register Preah Vihear temple as an UNESCO world heritage site.

A joint press release, issued on May 7 after a meeting between Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and Thai Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Virasakdi Futrakul, said the registration will not affect the demarcation of the two countries’ border around the temple.

Under a decision made by the International Court of Justice in 1962, the ownership of the temple belongs to Cambodia. However, Thailand had not awarded it to Cambodia till 2000.

The World Heritage Committee is scheduled to consider Cambodia’s proposal to recognise the temple as a world heritage at the committee’s 32 nd meeting slated for Canada in July. –Enditem
