Thailand to sell 500,000 tonnes of rice to Malaysia

08/05/2008 -- 10:17 PM

Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand will export 500,000 tonnes of rice to Malaysia to help Kuala Lumpur address a severe shortage for domestic consumption, local media reported.

Thailand will export about 100,000 tonnes of rice within the next three days and the remainder at a later date, Thai government spokesman Vichienchot Sukchokrat was quoted by the Thai news agency (TNA) as saying on May 8.

The sales price will be based on the market price, he added.

The agreement to sell rice to Malaysia came after a meeting between Malaysian Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Mustapa Mohamed, Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and Commerce Minister and Thi Deputy Prime Minister Mingkwan Saengsuwan on early May 8, TNA said. –Enditem
