Bangkok (VNA) – Labour ministers from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have gathered in Bangkok, Thailand, for the 20th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting (ALMM).
Speaking at the opening ceremony on May 8, Thailand’s Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej called on ASEAN member countries to clarify the disadvantages regional labourers are facing.
PM Samak said ASEAN countries are now lack of qualified labourers, not jobs. Regional labourers do not have many opportunities for suitable employment and most have not been provided with job information, vocational training and social security, he added.
The Thai PM said he hoped the two-day meeting “Promotion and Enhancement of Decent Work for the Vulnerable Categories of Labour” would be a forum for ASEAN countries to exchange information and experiences on the labour issue and that consensus would be reached.
ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. –Enditem
