Vietnam ditches US training to play friendly

09/05/2008 -- 11:24 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – The national teach coach has scrapped plans for Vietnam to attend a training session in the United States, preferring instead to play friendlies against Indonesia and another Southeast Asian team ahead of crucial regional tournaments.

“Competing against Indonesia and another team in the region will be more beneficial and less tiring,” said Henrique Calisto.

“Players do not benefit all that much from short training sessions abroad, and they tend to be exhausting. I just want them to train in Vietnam to improve their skills,” said Calisto.

The Portuguese coach said he will pick a small squad to travel to Indonesia .

“The selection is not easy. I have only eight days left to complete the final list of players,” said Calisto.

“I will watch them closely before making my final decision.
Anyway, only 20 players including two goalkeepers will go with me to Indonesia ,” he said.

The squad will begin training together on May 26 before leaving for Indonesia on June 11. Prior to leaving, they will play at least two friendly matches in Vietnam .

The squad will regroup in September and then in mid-October and late November for the Agribank Cup and the ASEAN Football Federation Championship.

When Calisto was appointed national team coach early last month, he was told by the Viet Nam Football Federation that the team must bring home a gold from this year’s ASEAN Football Federation Championship.-Enditem
