Chinese President calls for closer ties with Japan

09/05/2008 -- 12:17 PM

Tokyo (VNA) - China and Japan should view each other as partners not rivals, Chinese President Hu Jintao has said during his current five-day visit to Japan.

In a speech at Tokyo's Waseda University on March 8, Hu stressed China and Japan “should recognise each others' development objectively and accurately, and see each other as cooperative partners not rivals.”

“'Both sides should support the other side's peaceful development, and see the other's development as an opportunity, not a threat,” he said.

“China will not engage in an arms race and will not become a threat to any country,'' Hu said, affirming that China has a defensive military policy and does not aim for hegemony, according to Kyodo News.-Enditem
