International donors help Cambodia fight bird flu

09/05/2008 -- 4:34 PM

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Cambodian government on May 8 signed an agreement with a group of international donors for grants totaling 11 million USD to help Cambodia carry out its national project on bird flu prevention and treatment.

The three-year project will receive 6 million USD from the World Bank, 3 million USD from the Japanese Government, and 2 million USD from the European Union and other donors, said Secretary of State of Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ouch Borith.

The project will complement Cambodia's Comprehensive Avian and Human Influenza (AHI) National Plan, which aims at minimizing influenza threats and preparing the country's health systems to deal with any possible outbreak.

Vice President of the National Committee for Disaster Management Nhim Vanda said Cambodia is now focused on the development of an integrated AHI control and human pandemic preparedness and response plan. The country is working closely with the international community to build its capacity for disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and emergency response.

Cambodia is one of Asia’s bird flu-infected countries with seven fatalities since it hit the desease in 2003.-Enditem
