Laos attracts 200 million USD in foreign investment

Vientiane (VNA) – Foreign investment has kept pouring in Laos , reaching 200 million USD in the first six months of the 2007-08 fiscal year, according to the Laos ’s Department of Investment Management and Encouragement.

During the period, Laos attracted 57 foreign-invested projects, including 18 projects in the agricultural sector worth 52.7 million USD and six mining projects worth 30 million USD.

The department said among nine foreign investors in Laos during the period, China topped the list with 22 projects worth of 84 million USD.

Vietnam ranked second with nine projects of 32 million USD, followed by the Republic of Korea with 26 million USD invested in eight projects. Thailand came in next with 10 projects worth 18.4 million USD.

Laos has signed a memorandum of understanding with foreign investors on a feasibility study to construct hydropower plants named Namkhan II and Namkhan III.

The Lao Government has also given green light to a French investor to build the Nam Nghiep II power plant.-Enditem
