Thai PM makes first visit to restive South

10/05/2008 -- 9:25 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Thailand’s Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on May 10 made his first visit to the southern insurgent zone since he took premiership post three months ago.

According to Thai media, PM Samak’s visit is aimed at seeking insight on the region's problems, meeting Muslim leaders and giving moral support to government officials.

PM Samak was accompanied by Army chief, Gen. Anupong Paochinda, and National Police Chief, Pol. Gen. Patcharawat Wongsuwan.

Thailand's three southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani have been troubled with insurgency-related violence which has claimed more than 3,000 lives since it resumed in early 2004. –Enditem
