Constitutional referendum held in Myanmar

10/05/2008 -- 9:25 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar’s nationwide referendum on the draft constitution kicked off as scheduled on May 10 despite severe consequences that the recent cyclone Nargis has caused to the country.

People across the country went to poll to cast votes on the charter except some areas, including the biggest city of Yangon , which are still declared as cyclone-hit regions, according to news agencies.

The new constitution has been prepared by the government-formed State Constitution Drafting Commission. The 194-page full text of the constitution draft was formally published for the first time on April 9.

The Myanmar authorities said the referendum, the first one in the country since 1990, will pay the way for democratic elections in the next two years. –Enditem
