More bird flu cases reported in India and Japan

Hanoi (VNA) – The deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has resurfaced in West Bengal state ( India ), with the latest area to be infected being the district of Darjeeling.

After two samples sent from dead poultry found in a village in the district have tested positive to the H5N1 virus, local authorities decided to cull about 20,000 chickens in the region.

The latest outbreak takes the number of infected districts in the state to 15, while urging the authorities in the state to kill more than 3.8 million poultries, according to news agencies.

Meanwhile, the H5N1 virus has also been detected in a dead swan, which was found on May 5 beside Lake Saroma in eastern Hokkaido.

This is the third H5N1 case confirmed this year in Japan, following a dead swan found April 24 in the Notsuke Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido and in three out of four swans found dead or dying near Lake Towada in Akita Prefecture on April 21. –Enditem
