12/05/2008 -- 10:39 AM

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s state pharmaceutical company PT Bio Farma is set to produce birdflu vaccines for humans starting in 2011 with an initial production of 20 million doses, said a company’s senior executive on May 11.

Production of the vaccines will need an investment of 43.6 million USD (400 billion rupiah) to cover the technology, infrastructure and human resources, PT Bio Farma’s Planning and Development Director Iskandar was cited as saying on the sidelines of a scholarship granting ceremony in Bandung the same day.

He said that the initial stage will see seasonal birdflu vaccines produced from next year and preparations made for the production of vaccines for humans in anticipation of a birdflu pandemic.

Some 20 million doses will for the first time be made available for domestic consumption, Iskandar said. However, this is actually too little compared to the total 240 million size population in Indonesia .

At present, PT Bio Farma is only producing H2N2 vaccines for fowls. It also produces meningitis vaccines for the prevention of pneumonia, according to Antara news agency.- Enditem
