China’s earthquake jolts northern Vietnam

12/05/2008 -- 5:42 PM

Hanoi (VNA)- The aftershock of a powerful earthquake that hit southern China created panic in Hanoi and northern provinces at about 13:28 local time on May 12.

The worst scenes were played out at high-rise buildings, where many people threw themselves out of doors to the streets to escape perceived danger.

Fortunately, no accidents occurred and people calmed down and returned to work minutes later.

Head of the Earthquake Observation Department under the Centre for Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Nguyen Tu Son said his centre recorded an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale at 6:28 GMT (or 13:28 Hanoi time) with its epicenter about 1,105 km from Vietnam’s capital.

The centre is closely monitoring the developments of the earthquake, Son said.--Enditem
