Quang Nam controls bird flu, blue ear epidemics

Quang Nam (VNA) – The central province of Quang Nam has announced an end to bird flu and blue ear epidemic in pigs, permitting the resumption of trading, slaughter and transporting of cattle and poultry within the locality. Avian influenza broke out in the communes of Tam Phu (Tam Ky city) and Tam Xuan II (Nui Thanh district), resulting in the forced culling of more than 6,000 chickens and ducks. As many as 438 pigs were destroyed following the incidence of blue ear epidemic in Dai Minh, Dai Tan, Dai Phong, Dai Cuong and Dai Thang communes of Dai Loc district. Quang Nam’s success was attributed to its concerted efforts in guiding farmers to prevent the spread of the diseases, setting up inter-sector forces to monitor the illegal transporting and trading of cattle and poultry and sending out medicines and veterinarians to the affected areas. Although the infections have been eradicated, the province has recommended local breeders remain cautious by vaccinating cattle herds and poultry flocks on schedule.-Enditem
